Below is a list of lyrics that have mostly replaced (though in some ways, they’ve just added to) the lyrics listed in my last two “Music & Lyrics” posts —
“I can't count the times I've called Your name some broken night / And You showed up and patched me up like You do every time / I get amnesia, I forget that You keep coming around / Yeah, ain't no way You'll ever let me down / Good God almighty
I hope You'll find me / Praising Your name no matter what comes / 'Cause I know where I'd be without Your mercy / So I keep praising Your name at the top of my lungs” — “Good God Almighty” — Milk & Honey, David Crowder {listen here}
I used this song in a past post but it’s been a mainstay since my parents’ accident. I play it and pray it and sing it almost daily as a reminder for my amnesia and fickle, forgetful heart. It’s how I “preach” the truth to myself and it keeps my heart fixed on my good God.
“Look at the stars / Look how they shine for you / And all the things that you do” — “Yellow” — Parachutes, Coldplay {listen here}
“Like a river flows, surely to the sea / Darling, so it goes, some things are meant to be / Take my hand. Take my whole life, too / For I can't help falling in love with you” — “Can’t Help Falling in Love” — Blue Hawaii, Elvis Presley
This song made an appearance in a past post, where I talked about the wedding scene from Crazy, Rich Asians. And while UB40’s version (released when I was a freshman in high school — yikes!!!) was my favorite, I lovelovelove this version by Kina Grannis, recorded for the movie (she performs in the movie!) and the soundtrack for Crazy, Rich Asians {listen here}
“One for the money, two for the show / I never was ready, so I watch you go / Sometimes you just don't know the answer / 'Til someone's on their knees and asks you / “She would have made such a lovely bride / What a shame she’s [explicit] in the head”, they said / But you’ll find the real thing instead / She’ll patch up your tapestry that I shred — “Champagne Problems” — evermore, Taylor Swift {listen here}
“Hemingway, Eichmann, "Stranger in a Strange Land" / Dylan, Berlin, Bay of Pigs invasion / "Lawrence of Arabia", British Beatlemania, Ole Miss, John Glenn, Liston beats Patterson / Pope Paul, Malcolm X, British politician sex JFK – blown away, what else do I have to say?” — “We Didn’t Start the Fire” — Storm Front, Billy Joel {listen here}
“Too many hearts on too many strings,
We could cut them down, but instead we let them hang in the breeze,
Oh, my brothers, tell me why.
And why is my sister down on her knees, crying out, "Won't somebody love me"?
And where are we?
Didn't He love them?
Didn't He hold out His hand?
Wasn't Jesus a model, an example to man of how we must love everyone in this land and give 'til it hurts?
Isn't that part of the plan?
But we can't see through our religious charade, to take what He's given and give love away.
One more night, no place to call home,
A torn-up jacket on his back, it's getting pretty cold,
Where do I stand?
Do I reach out my hand?
And one more child's face on my TV screen,
She's dying of hunger; why can't we meet her need?
And where are we?
Didn't He love them?
Didn't He hold out his hand?
Wasn't Jesus a model, an example to man of how we must love everyone in this land and give 'til it hurts?
Isn't that part of the plan?
But we can't see through our holy façade, to do the one thing that we're called to by God.
Didn't He love us?
Didn't He hold out his hand?
Wasn't Jesus a model, an example to man,
He said, "Love every person, everyone in this land, and give 'til it hurts,"
And wasn't that part of the plan?
But we've all been blinded by our selfish ways,
Can we change this pattern?
Will we stay the same?
Didn't he love them?
Didn't he hold out his hand?
Wasn't Jesus a model, an example to man of how we must love everyone in this land and give 'til it hurts?
Isn't that part of the plan?
Didn't he love them?
Didn't he hold out his hand?
Wasn't Jesus a model, an example to man of how we must love everyone in this land and give 'til it hurts?
Isn't that part of the plan?
Didn't he love them?
Didn't he love them?
Didn't he love them?
Didn't he love them?”
“Didn’t He” — Pray for Rain, PFR {listen here} — I remember when this song played on my local Christian music station (WCIE), when it was released in 1992. I was in middle school and while I don’t remember having the heart for justice that I do now, this song resonated with my young heart and I remember praying then (as I pray now) that I would love others, hold out my hand, love everyone, and give of myself, as Jesus modeled and commanded.
